Muladhara – The Base Chakra

Today we are finally going to get to the bottom of the mysterious chakra system. There are seven main chakras that interact with the biological body. Chakra means wheel in Sanskrit and, in this case, the word refers to the little ‘power stations’ of energy that appear all the way down your spinal column which collect, process and store information from the environment, your emotions and your physical body. Meet the chakra at the root of it all.

Muladhara, or the root chakra, is nestled in at the base of your spine. Spinning more slowly than the others, this chakra provides your connection to the earth – it is your grounding chakra. Energy flows from the earth, up your legs and into this chakra where it is processed into a more usable form of energy for your body. Excess energy is sent back down into the ground.

As you might expect, problems with this chakra often manifest themselves as pain in the lower back, legs and hips – as sciatica, for example.  Oddly enough, this chakra is also connected to our sense of smell. This is because it is the chakra most closely linked to our primal instinct, incorporating our fundamental needs for shelter, food and security – in short our survival instinct.

If your root chakra is powering along nicely, you may display assertiveness to the right degree, courage, and strength of will. You may be an enterprising or pioneering type of person. If, however, your base chakra is a little clogged up with unresolved emotional issues, you may find yourself feeling insecure, self-pitying, aggressive or fearful.

Muladhara governs the adrenal glands. The over-stimulation of these glands can lead to feelings of anxiety; therefore, it’s very important to keep Muladhara well-balanced. Do you have enough money for the rent? Do you have enough food on the table? Are you happy with your job? These are the sorts of insecurities that can manifest themselves in Muladhara. The spiritual lessons Muladhara wants to teach us are about the material and the physical aspects of the world. Lessons regarding greed and patience are this chakra’s specialty.

In order to rally this chakra into action, there are a number of things you can do. Dances where there is a strong emphasis on the feet making contact with the earth are good for Muladhara. Think tribal – strong beats and rhythmic stamps.

Western classical styles of dance, such as ballet, are not much use here. They try to defy connection to the earth by constantly breaking away from the earth’s bounds with light leaps and an emphasis on upward motion.

As you are dancing, with your feet making strong, rhythmic contact with the ground, visualise the colour red. This is the colour associated with Muladhara. Think of a red object like a bright red apple and perhaps visualise the energy flowing up your legs and into your root chakra. Give it a good work-out. If you start to feel the chakra pulsating or tingling, there’s definitely something happening. Before you walk out into the world again, be sure to close the chakra by sending the energy back down. This is a good exercise to do if you are feeling a little spacey or flighty.

Muladhara is the first energy-processing plant that the universal energy goes to when it enters your body. It is essential to have it in fine working order, as the health of the other six chakras depend on this one.

So get back to basics and dance with Muladhara – the chakra at the root of your existence.
